Western Action Shooting with...

 the

Picketts Hill Marshals

We have been shooting Western Action Shooting at Headley Park for the last ten years and it is now firmly established.

Courses of fire (we run between 3-5 courses a match) are very loosely based around cowboy scenarios and involve the use of various targets including steel plates, clays, cardboard cut outs etc. The scoring system is very simple and is based on hits. If you miss a target five seconds is added to your time, with minor infringements or procedural errors adding ten seconds. The idea is to hit as many targets as you can in the shortest time.

Ideally, the kit you should have once you are firmly established in the sport is:

Two Black Powder Muzzle loading Revolvers.

One Under-lever Rifle in a pistol calibre. (Not magazine fed)

One side by side non-eject shotgun or a pump action of the period around 1880.*

It is not necessary to have this equipment when you start, Western Shooters are a very friendly bunch and will help you out if you want to try a stage or two but please offer to re-imburse any ammunition costs.

Please be aware that you will not be able to participate in competitions until we are satisfied that you are range safe.

We wear Cowboy clothing as far as possible and once you are established you will require a gun-belt and two holsters.

We all use a Cowboy alias, again this is not mandatory but it does enter into the “Spirit off the Game” Western or Cowboy Action Shooting is all about having fun whilst still maintaining strict safety rules. Come along and have some fun.

Western Action Shoots are held on the 3rd Sunday of the month, range build from around 9.15am for 10am start.

To those of you with access to the internet you can get a feel for this type of shooting by going to www.sassnet.com/ there are also hundreds of video clips available to view on the internet.

I warn you, it becomes addictive.
